English/ Medieval World History - Mrs. Baird
In CORE, we learn about two very important subjects. These two subjects are Language Arts and World History. Language arts teaches us about the simple language of English. It teaches us proper language and grammar. This is very important because we obviously speak English every day more than we do anything else. As for world history, we learn about anything from ancient times all the way to just centuries ago. I believe it is very important to have information about our ancestors, and about foreign countries. These countries contribute to what we have in the United States, and I think it is important that we know and learn about this.
Traders and Invaders Simulation In CORE, during the beginning of the school year, every class did the simulation known as Traders and Invaders. We reenacted, in a bit of a playful manner, the trading of Rome. Everyone got a different role. There were Romans, barbarians, and provinces. Every Roman had to trade 1,000 soldiers for two 'tokens' of the province's product. Let me just say, this simulation was very fun.
More seriously, this simulation was actually educational. It taught us some things about Rome. Well, it didn't necessarily teach us anything new, but it surely did help us remember the important information about Rome. It showed how Rome circulated around trading soldiers for different items, and then the Romans didn't have enough protection for their own. All barbarians then began attacking Rome, all for different reasons. Therefore, Rome fell. |
Gold and Salt Trade Simulation In CORE, we did another simulation. This time is was to learn about the trading of salt and gold long ago in Western Africa. We playfully reenacted the journies that these Africans had to take through the mountains, desert, and river. We were supposed to learn the trading method that was used for trade between two different groups in West Africa. It didn't exactly connect to any other subject. But you can say it connected to math, because they had to make a deal that they thought was equal.
In a serious matter, it did help us get a feel for what the Africans went through when they were making trades. Although not very accurate, we had fun doing it and I would rather do another one of these simulations rather than paperwork any day. |
The Black Death Presentation (Thinglink)![]() This is a presentation about the Black Death, a plague that wiped out a huge amount of Europe during the Middle Ages. We were required to make this to show that we actually have learned about some new things in our CORE classes. The only subject that this really relates to is computers. Of course that is because this was created during the computer class. The tool I used to create this is, as already shown, Thinglink. I would say it is a fairly good tool to use for free if you need to present a subject quickly yet clearly.
Even this being my favorite subject of all year, I did learn some new things from creating this. For example, I learned about some ways that people believed that they could cure the plague from people (even though it clearly didn't wok). Overall, this was mainly created to show our skills with one of the tools we learned about and a subject that we learned in CORE. |
